#9 Richfield Springs-Owen D. Young 67 / #2 (NYS #4) South Kortright - Andes @ SUNY Delhi Section 4 Final A month and a half ago Richfield Springs limped out of their 14th game of the season with a record of 7-7. The final loss was to South Kortright and was a drubbing that finished with a score of 91-42. RSO had suffered numerous covid quarantines and injuries to that point. From the outside it looked like the season was on it's way to a ho hum mediocre finish. Coach Busch and the players tell us there was a different story line in the locker room. "We knew we had been battle tested and performed well given the challenges we had faced. The reality is 6 of those 7 losses were to state ranked teams, such as West Canada and VVS. We knew could play with anyone if we just kept our noses to the grind stone and got healthy." (Coach Busch) Low and behold, RSO did just that. They rolled into tonight's section 4 final vs South Kortright going 9-1 in their last 10 games. Despite this, RSO was getting zero love from the media who still had not seen fit to recognize their tough early schedule or their recent victories over state ranked or honorably mentioned Franklin, Morris and Davenport. Tonight the Indians proved without a doubt, that they are absolutely one of the best teams in NYS this year. Of course, RSO had to make it interesting. They spotted South Kortright an 11 point lead by halftime and things looked bleak with leading scorer Dylan Hosford hobbled by a in game ankle injury. Then the real RSO showed up...As third quarter progressed RSO's forwards Brogan Graves, Clay Bobnick and Andrew Oakley started to figure out the SK pressure defense and attacked it with beautiful passing. They also each were brilliant defensively with numerous deflections and charges to go along with a combined 13 points. Eventually they sparked the RSO offense into a 22-10 fourth quarter run. Offensively Dylan Hosford led the game with 25 points, Austin Bowman added 12 and clutch three's from Landon Schultz, Jordy Diliberto and Brayden Dunckel in the fourth quarter led RSO to a 3 point lead with 6 seconds to go. Of course, anyone who has seen Coach Carter knows...sometimes story book endings aren't to be. South Kortright's Conner Quarino buried a heavily contested 3 as time expired to take the game into overtime, where SK edged out RSO by 1 after a half court heave fell short. South Kortright will move on the face Section 1 champ Greenburgh-North Castle, but the Richfield Springs-ODY boys did the Mohawk Valley proud in the battle to runner up status.
