FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

French 7 - Introduction to French
This course (or Spanish 7) is required for all seventh grade students. The course meets the graduation requirement for one of two years of study in a foreign language. (Some accelerated seventh grade students may join this course). No prerequisite. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. One full year of seat time will be granted if course is successfully completed. A local final exam will be given. This course is designed to provide the student with a foundation of the basic elements of language learning. The student will develop basic grammar structures as well as acquire large amounts of vocabulary. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be enhanced as vocabulary and grammar structures are mastered. The students will also have the opportunity to explore the culture of French-speaking countries.

Spanish 7 - Introduction to Spanish
This course (or French 7) is required for all seventh grade students. The course meets the graduation requirement for one of two years of study in a foreign language. The student will also have the opportunity to explore the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

French I
This course (or Spanish I) is required for all eighth grade students. The course meets the graduation requirement for the second year of a two-year course of study in a foreign language. It also meets the first units of credit for a three-year language sequence for any student wishing to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: French 7. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of the course. The final exam will be the New York State Proficiency exam in French. This course continues to develop basic French speech, grammar, reading and vocabulary using a communicative approach in all four areas of language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will continue the exploration of the culture of French-speaking countries.

Spanish I
This course (or French I) is required for all eighth grade students. The course meets the graduation requirement for the second year of a two-year course of study in a foreign language. It also meets the first units of credit for a three-year language sequence for any student wishing to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: Spanish 7. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of the course. The final exam will be the New York State Proficiency exam in Spanish. This course continues to develop basic Spanish speech, grammar, reading and vocabulary using a communicative approach in all four areas of language. Reading, writing, listening and speaking skills continue to develop towards proficiency. Culture is also integrated into lessons.

French II
This elective course meets the second year requirement for a three-unit sequence for students earning a Regents Diploma and/or an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: French I or with permission of the instructor. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of this course. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 9. A local final exam will be given. This course focuses on the development of grammar and the expansion of verb tenses and their correct uses. Students will be expected to communicate using the four aspects of language: reading, writing, listening and speaking, beyond a tourist level. Students will also continue the exploration of the culture of French-speaking countries. (Students new to RSCS are encouraged to meet with the instructor to ensure proper placement).

Spanish II
This elective course meets the second year requirement for a three-unit sequence for students earning a Regents Diploma and/or an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: Spanish I or with permission of the instructor. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of this course. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 9. A local final exam will be given. This course focuses on the development of grammar and the expansion of verb tenses and their correct usage. This elective course meets the third year requirement for a three-unit sequence for students earning a Regents Diploma and/or an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: French II. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of this course. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 10. The final exam will be the Regional Exam in French (formerly Regents). In this course, the student will work towards mastering language skills which will allow them to communicate with a native speaker in all aspects of the language. Conversations, readings and writing tasks are assigned on a regular basis. Cultural understanding will move towards the appreciation of French-speaking countries and their civilizations.

Spanish III R
This elective course meets the third year requirement for a three-unit sequence for students earning a Regents Diploma and/or an Advanced Regents Diploma. Prerequisite: Spanish II. One unit of credit will be granted upon successful completion of this course. This course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 10. The final exam will be a Regional Exam in Spanish (formerly Regents). In this course, the student will work towards mastering the language skills which will allow him/her to communicate with a native speaker in all aspects of the language. Conversations, readings and writings are assigned on a regular basis. Cultural understandings move towards appreciation.

French IV "College Now" (FL. 121: College French I)
An elective course for seniors. Prerequisite: successful completion of French III. Admission into this course requires teacher approval. One-half unit of credit is granted. This course is usually offered during the fall semester. The course will meet every day for 20 weeks. A local final exam will be given. Students can also earn college credit. (Please see your counselor or French teacher for details). This course is designed to provide the students with a reading, writing, speaking and listening knowledge of French. In addition to language skills, the course provides an understanding of the civilization and culture of French-speaking people. Upon successful completion of this course, students who enrolled with the college will receive 3 college credits from Herkimer County Community College. (There is a fee for this course as it is part of our concurrent enrollment College Now program through HCCC).

French IV "College Now" (FL. 122: College French II)
An elective course for seniors. Prerequisite: successful completion of French IV "College Now" (FL. 121: College French I). Admission into this course requires teacher approval. One-half unit of credit is granted. This course is usually offered during the spring semester. The course will meet every day for 20 weeks. A local final exam will be given. Students can also earn college credit. (Please see your counselor or French teacher for details). This course is designed to provide the student with further practice in reading, writing, speaking and listening in French. In addition to language skills, the course provides an in depth study of the culture of French-speaking people. Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive 3 college credits from Herkimer County Community College. (There is a fee for this course as it is part of our concurrent enrollment College Now program through HCCC).

Spanish IV "College Now" (FL. 101: College Spanish I)
An elective course for seniors. Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish III. Admission into this course requires teacher approval. One-half unit of credit is granted. An elective course for seniors. Prerequisite: successful completion of Spanish IV "College Now" (FL. 102: College Spanish I. Admission into this course requires teacher approval. One-half unit of credit is granted. This course is usually offered during the spring semester. The course will meet every day for 20 weeks. A local final exam will be given. Students can also earn college credit. (Please see your counselor or Spanish teacher for details). This course is designed to provide the intermediate Spanish student with a reading, writing, listening and speaking knowledge of Spanish. In addition to language skills, the course provides and in-depth study of the culture of Spanish-speaking people. Upon successful completion of this course, students who enrolled with the college will receive 3 college credits from Herkimer County Community College. (There is a fee for this course as it is part of our concurrent enrollment College Now program through HCCC).
