COURSE DESCRIPTIONMUSIC EDUCATION

Chorus 7-8
An elective course for 7th and 8th grade students. Completion of the course meets the Junior High Performing Arts requirement. No credit granted. No prerequisites. Course will meet every other day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grades 7-8. A local final exam will be given. This course focuses on concert literature in 3 parts (SAB). Attendance at 2 formal concerts are required. Students will have the opportunity to attend a music competition at the end of the year. Students wanting to be part of All-County Chorus and NYSSMA Solo Festival must be enrolled in this class. Extra credit is given to those students who participate in outside performance ensembles and activities.

Music 8
Allows eighth graders to complete the junior high performing arts requirement. No credit granted. Prerequisite: Music 7. Course will meet every day for 10 weeks. A local final exam will be given. The object of this course is to provide students with a basic understand of music. They will explore music through playing, improvising, creating and analyzing music and the different styles.

Music Theory

An elective course for some high school students. A required course for students wishing to earn a three-or five-unit sequence in music. One-half unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: taking band and/or chorus during the same school year they take Music Theory. Recommended grade level: grades 9-12. A local final exam will be given. Students in this class will complete a theory course that covers music notation, scales, modes, keys, intervals, simple chord progressions, elementary sight singing, melodic and rhythmic dictation, and elementary keyboard accompaniment using primary chords. There is also an aural training component to this course. Students will work out of workbooks and on laptop computers to complete their homework/classwork. This course will prepare students who need to take a theory entrance exam before going to college.


College Now Music Appreciation

This course is designed to introduce the student to the major styles and periods in musical history, with emphasis upon understanding basic concepts of musical composition and developing better listening skills.

Chorus 9-12
An elective course that can be used toward completion of the HS graduation requirement in the arts. A required course for 9-12 students wishing to earn a three or five unit music sequence. One-half unit of credit will be granted. No prerequisites. The course will meet every other day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grades 9-12. A local final exam will be given. This course will focus on upper level concert literature. Chorus works will be will be performed for SATB voices as accompanied or acapella. Attendance at 2 formal concerts are required. Students wanting to be part of All-County Chorus and NYSSMA Solo Festival as well as Conference or Area All State must be enrolled in this class. Extra credit is given to those students who participate in outside performance ensembles and activities.

Concert Band 7-12

An elective course that can be used toward completion of the HS graduation requirement in the arts. A required course for 9-12 students wishing to earn a three or five unit music sequence. One-half unit of credit will be granted for 9-12 students. No units of credit for 7-8 grade students. No prerequisite. The course will meet every other day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grades 7-12. A local final exam will be given. Music education is an art and experience that can not be enhanced in any other principle and is a vital part of our lives. Band offers several areas of required performance. Lessons: all students in the band program are required to attend lessons. Lessons are held for one (1) full period on a rotating cycle. Concert Band: rehearsals are held every other day. There will also be after school rehearsal before Winter and Spring concerts, plus Sherburne Festival in June. (all three required) Marching Band: rehearsals after school and during band rehearsal evenings in September and then again starting after Spring Break. Fall pep band, Memorial Day parade, Sherburne Festival and July 4th parades are all required.
