MATH

Math 7

A required course for all seventh grade students. No prerequisites. No units of credit. Only seat time is required. Students must pass this course before moving to the next level of math. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. A local final exam will be given. This course will review the Math 6 curriculum and will add the following topics: Patterns and sequences, integer operation, algebra readiness topics of translating verbal expressions and literal sentences into algebraic expressions, learning to solve one and two-step equations and statistics.

Math 8
A required course for all eighth grade students. Prerequisite: Math 7. No units of credit. Only seat time is required. Students must pass this course before moving to the next level of math. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. A local final exam will be given. This course will review the Math 7 curriculum and will add the following topics: Exponents, Scientific Notation, Transformations, Linear Equations, Linear Functions, Functions from Geometry, and Number Theory. These students will be taking Algebra or Math 1 as 9th graders based on their level of success.

Algebra (Non-Regents)
A course that can be used toward completion of the three-unit math graduation requirement. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Math 8. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 9. A local final exam will be given. This is a full-year course designed to assist math students to perform efficiently on the Integrated Algebra regents exam. Algebra develops a deeper understanding of topics that are typically difficult to master in the rigorous Math 1 course. This course builds a solid foundation for Math 1.

Regents Algebra:
A required course for a three-unit sequence. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Math 8 or Basic Algebra. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 9 and/or 10. Math 1 is the first course of a three-year sequence in Regents mathematics. This course is a study of functions including linear, quadratic, and exponential. Students will take the Common Core Algebra Regents exam and a local final exam in June. Students must pass the Regents exam and three high school math courses to meet the requirements for a Regents diploma. Students who are pursuing an Advanced Regents diploma must also pass the Geometry Regents exam and Common Core Algebra 2 Regents exam. The use of a graphing calculator (TI-83+/TI-84+ recommended) is required.

Regents Geometry
A required course for a three or five-unit math sequence and for the Advanced Regents Diploma. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Regents Algebra and successful completion of the Integrated Algebra Regents. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grades 10 or 11. Students will take the Geometry Regents in June and a local final exam in June. This is a full-year course designed to further the study of geometry. Students taking this course must pass the Geometry Regents before beginning Regents Algebra II/Trig. The use of the TI-nspire will be used in class, a graphing calculator is mandated.

Regents Algebra II & Trigonometry

A required course for an Advanced Regents diploma. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Regents Geometry credit and successful completion of the Geometry Regents exam. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 11 or 12. This course is the third course of a three-year sequence in Regents mathematics. The course is a study of functions including linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric as well as sequences, complex numbers, probability, and statistics. Students will take a local final exam and the Common Core Algebra 2 Regents exam. They must pass three mathematics Regents exams (Common Core Algebra, Common Core Geometry, and Common Core Algebra 2) and three high school math courses to meet the requirements for an Advanced Regents diploma. The use of a graphing calculator (TI-84+ recommended) is required.

Regents Geometry Part I
An elective course that meets one of the three math credits needed for graduation. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Regents Algebra. A local final exam will be given. Students in this course will explore geometry with the goal of taking the regents in year two.

Consumer Math
An elective course that students can take to meet one of three math credits for graduation. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Math 1. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grades 11 & 12. A local final exam will be given. Students will carefully examine the mathematics of everyday lives. Particular attention will be given to checkbooks, savings options, managing money for bills, and budgeting. This course is designed to help students enter the adult world with the confidence of being wise consumers and investors.

Statistics
An elective course for seniors wishing to take a fourth year of math in preparation for going to college. One unit of credit will be granted. Prerequisite: Math 3. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 12. A local final exam will be given. Emphasis will be placed on data gathering, analysis and interpretation. Students will become proficient in using the TI83+ graphing calculator as a statistics tool, as well as using statistics formulas.

College Now Calculus
A senior year elective course for the strongest math students. This course is a freshman level college course. One credit will be granted. The course will meet every day for 40 weeks. Recommended grade level: grade 12. This course is a comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of calculus including derivatives and their applications, integrals, differential equations and slope fields. All aspects of calculus will be explored numerically, algebraically and graphically. (Students who wish to receive the college credit must pay an enrollment fee thru Herkimer College.)
